DRIP and No DRIP start with $1,000; DRIP + $100 monthly adds $100 monthly. Growth rates are capped at 10% a year. These are estimates from past growth, not a promise.
So far: the plan you ran turned $13,500 invested into $31,415 between Oct 27, 2016 and Oct 27, 2026, a 15.64% compounded annual return (CAGR) with dividends reinvested. Projected: if SPY keeps its last-5-year growth (share price +10.00% a year, dividend +5.75% a year, growth capped at 10% a year), $1,000 with DRIP grows to $54,724 in 40 years, about 10.52% a year compounded. The first figure is what compound returns actually did; the second is an estimate from past growth, not a promise.

How the DCA Calculator Works
Buys. Your first investment buys at the first closing price on or after the start date. After that, the recurring amount buys every week, month, quarter or year. Fractional shares are kept, so every dollar is invested. Set the recurring amount to $0 to test a single lump sum.
Dividends. Each dividend is paid on the shares you held on its ex-dividend date. With DRIP, it buys more shares at the close of the first trading day after the pay date, and those shares earn the next dividend. Without DRIP, the dividend stays as cash and earns nothing.
Prices. Real daily closing prices, adjusted for stock splits, back to each ticker’s first close on record (SPY: Jan 29, 1993). ETFs start at their launch date.
Left out. No commissions, taxes or slippage. A real account will land a little lower.
Reading the results
- Total invested, Final value (DRIP), DCA total return: the three numbers at the top.
- Compounded DCA returns: total return, the plan’s compounded annual return (CAGR), the dividends’ share of the gain and the share price CAGR, then money invested against what it grew to, next to the projection.
- Year-by-Year chart: what you had invested against what it was worth at the end of each year, plus the dividends that year.
- Total Return chart: With DRIP, No DRIP and Total Invested on one chart. The gap between the first two is what reinvesting added. The Share Price tab shows the price over the same period.
- Performance Metrics: share price change and its CAGR, yield on cost, and how much the dividend grew.
- Dividend history: every ex-date, pay date and amount in the period.
Why DCA total return can trail the share price gain
The share price % compares the first and last price, as if all the money went in on day one. In a DCA plan most dollars go in later and have less time to grow. So a stock can be up more than a DCA plan in it. Both numbers are right; they answer different questions.
History vs projection
Everything above Projected Future Returns & Dividends is history. That section is a projection: it carries the stock’s 5-year, 10-year or lifetime growth rates forward, capped at 10% a year.

DCA Calculator FAQ
What is dollar cost averaging (DCA)?
Dollar cost averaging means investing the same dollar amount on a schedule, every week or every month, whatever the price. When the price is low your money buys more shares; when it is high it buys fewer. To dollar cost average into a stock or ETF you pick the amount and the schedule and keep buying. This DCA calculator replays that plan on real closing prices and real dividends.
DCA vs lump sum: which did better in SPY?
A lump sum invests all the money on day one; DCA spreads it out. In SPY from Jan 4, 2016: $500 a month, $65,000 in total, is worth $157,528 today (15.6% a year). The same $65,000 invested in one go on Jan 4, 2016 is worth $294,926 (15.0% a year). The lump sum finished $137,398 ahead, because all of the money was invested from the first day. A lump sum tends to win when prices rise; DCA lowers the risk of putting everything in just before a drop, and it fits money you save from each paycheck.
What does CAGR mean in this DCA calculator?
CAGR is the compounded annual growth rate: the one yearly rate that turns what you invested into what you have, with growth earning growth. For a single lump sum it compares the first and last value. A DCA plan adds money over time, so this calculator reports a money-weighted CAGR (a compounded annual return rate): each deposit compounds only from the day it went in. For SPY, $500 a month since Jan 4, 2016 compounded at 15.6% a year; one lump sum on that first day compounded at 15.0% a year.
Can I backtest weekly or monthly DCA?
Yes. Pick Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly or Yearly in DCA Frequency. Weekly buys every 7 days, monthly every 30, quarterly every 91 and yearly every 365. Set the recurring amount to $0 to test one lump sum instead.
How are dividends reinvested?
Each dividend is paid on the shares you held on the ex-dividend date. With DRIP, it buys more shares at the close of the first trading day after the pay date, and those new shares earn the next dividend. The No DRIP line keeps the same dividends as cash, so the gap between the two lines is what reinvesting added.
What would $10,000 in SPY be worth after 10 years?
Load SPY, tap 10Y to set the start date 10 years back, put $10,000 in Initial Investment and $0 in Extra Investment, then press Calculate. The Final value (DRIP) number is your answer; the No DRIP line shows the same money without reinvesting.
Why can a DCA plan’s total return be lower than the share price gain?
The share price % compares the first and last price, as if everything was invested on day one. In a DCA plan, later buys have less time to grow, so the plan’s return is usually lower than the stock’s own price move. Both numbers are correct; they measure different things.

Company Info
State Street SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY) had its IPO on 1993-01-22, and is traded on AMEX stock exchange.
SPY is the best-recognized and oldest US listed ETF and typically tops rankings for largest AUM and greatest trading volume. The fund tracks the massively popular US index, the S&P 500. Few realize that S&P's index committee chooses 500 securities to represent the US large-cap space - not necessarily the 500 largest by market cap, which can lead to some omissions of single names. Still, the index offers outstanding exposure to the US large-cap space. It's important to note, SPY is a unit investment trust, an older but entirely viable structure. As a UIT, SPY must fully replicate its index (it probably would anyway) and forgo the small risk and reward of securities lending. It also can`t reinvest portfolio dividends between distributions, the resulting cash drag will slightly hurt performance in up markets and help in downtrends. SPY is a favored vanilla trading vehicle.
