High Yield ETFs
Dividend-growth ETFs like SCHD focus on a payout that rises over time. Covered-call ETFs such as JEPI and JEPQ pay larger monthly distributions instead, and a newer group — YieldMax and similar option-strategy funds — runs quoted yields above 20%, usually with bigger swings in both price and payout.

JEPI Dividend Payments, Yield & Share Price
Below are all of JEPI's dividend payments since 2020 with the yield line overlaid, next to JEPI's share-price history over the same stretch. The range pills zoom both charts together.
The red line marks the yield on each payment date: that payment annualized at the payout frequency in
force at the time, divided by JEPI's share price on that day.
Over the measured 6.3 years, JEPI's share price has grown faster than its dividend (0.71% vs -3.20% per year) — that is why the yield line tends to drift down even in stretches where the dollar payments hold steady.

Why is JEPI dividend ETF so popular?
Honestly that is an excellent question! Back in 2022, when JEPI was yielding 10-11%, many people could justify holding JEPI for dividend income, with minimal price volatility (which is the selling point of JEPI).
But now in 2024, with forward yield being around 6.5% and non-qualified dividends (meaning you pay higher tax rate in the US), and flat price for past 12 months, JEPI is not so attractive.
If you compare JEPI vs SCHD, you will see that SCHD had 29% higher return than JEPI in the period since JEPI’s inception.
Should you buy JEPI for dividend income?
While we don’t provide investment advice, we feel that even in the near term, with forward dividend yield falling below 6.5% (as of Feb. 2024), with non-qualified dividends (higher tax) and no price appreciation, there are better options out there.
